Gweyn Zechman, a native of Iowa, began coaching in the collegiate ranks in 1987. She brings a multitude of experience to the CVA program. Zechman graduated from New Mexico State University where she was a four-year starter for the Roadrunners as a right side hitter/setter.
She earned honorable mention All-High Country Athletic Conference and Scholar Athlete honors. Zechman served as team captain as both a junior and senior, on teams that averaged 20 win seasons.
After graduating, Zechman took over as head volleyball and softball coach at Cameron University, a NCAA Division II school located in Lawton, Oklahoma. She was responsible for reviving a volleyball program that had not competed in 12 years and did so without the aid of any scholarships.
She spent the next three years at Washington State University as an assistant coach. The Cougars won the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in her final year.
Zechman then returned as Head Coach to her alma mater, New Mexico State University for the next four years where she guided the Roadrunners to its highest finish in the Big West Conference.
She then joined the Ohio State University program and spent five years as an assistant coach handling the recruiting duties. The Buckeyes were ranked in the top 25 and finished in the top half of the Big Ten Conference with 20 win seasons. She recruited and coached All -American Stacey Gordon and AVCA Selection Katie Virtue.
Zechman has also worked with Club teams in Washington, New Mexico and Ohio and has coached both girls and boy’s high school teams at Hilliard Davidson and Grove City. She also does camps and clinics throughout the U.S. Her experience and contacts in the volleyball community are extensive.
